Spearheading the movement are the legendary singers/composers Antonio Carlos “Tom) Jobim (photo) , João Gilberto, Vinicius de Moraes and the young generation from the southern part of Rio de Janeiro. Bossa Nova has strong influences from samba and jazz. At the end of the 1960’s, Bossa Nova was discovered by American jazz musicians and developed into one of the most influential and world-famous movements within Brazilian music history. The English version of "The Girl from Ipanema" (performed by Astrud Gilberto) has become Brazil's biggest international hit, even to this day.

The legendary singer Caetano Veloso returns to Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw on Friday 19 May. Presenting ‘Teresa Canta Cartola’, Caetano is bringing the singer Teresa Cristina to Amsterdam. This concert tour with Teresa Cristina, which takes in a number of European cities, accompanies the release of her new album Teresa Canta Cartola in which she pays homage to the great poet and composer Cartola, of Rio’s famous Mangueira samba school. Caetano Veloso was present at the birth of this project and remains deeply impressed by Teresa Cristina’s performance:
“The tranquillity in which every chosen chord suggests Teresa’s voice entrance refines the listeners soul. And Teresa grows with every melody, every word, every second. Every Brazilian should watch and hear what happened on Theatro Net Rio that night,” said Veloso after her show during the opening evening. For Caetano, that moment led to his decision to bring the musical qualities of this charming singer to a wider public. Teresa opens the programme with songs by Cartola, followed by Caetano’s presentation with voice and guitar. They conclude the evening by singing Caetano’s greatest hits together. Location Amsterdam Conservatorium Oosterdokkade 151 1011 DL Amsterdam Tickets SOLD OUT A legendary duo, leaders of the Brazilian Tropicália movement of the 1960s, are back on stage. The 2015 Viva Brasil Festival opens on Thursday 25 June with an exclusive inaugural concert by Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil in the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. Under the motto ‘Two Friends, a Century of Music’, Caetano and Gil are launching a European tour in Amsterdam. Gilberto Gil (who was also Brazil’s Minister of Culture between 2003 and 2008) and Caetano Veloso are responsible for no fewer than 103 albums, and are regarded as the two most influential artists in all of Brazilian music. They were two of the leaders of the Tropicália movement, which arose in the late 1960s in Brazil during the country’s military dictatorship. Tropicália brought about far-reaching changes in Brazil’s musical culture, including mixing traditional Brazilian music with bossa nova and American pop.
Tropicália brought about changes not only in music but also in poetry, film, theatre and the visual arts. The movement had an enormous influence on the outlook and behaviour of an entire generation. After living in exile for some years in London, in 1972 Caetano and Gil returned to Brazil and grew into the international figureheads of MPB (Musica Popular Brasileira). The duo was (and continues to be) responsible for a stream of musical hits. In 1993 their collaboration led to the acclaimed album Tropicália 2, created to celebrate the 25th anniversary of this movement. Now, 22 years later, the two friends have got together to share the stage once again. Info and tickets: www.vivabrasil.nl Brazil is in the international spotlight as never before. The eyes of the world have been on South America’s largest country since the summer and things are sure to stay that way until mid-2016. The FIFA World Cup put Brazil on the map as a modern superpower; with the Olympic Games coming to Rio in 2016, the country hopes to consolidate that status and even expand on it. The world’s two greatest sporting events were not secured for nothing; a gold medal is great, but winning on all fronts is even better!
“The Brazilian Tourist Board Embratur is keen to reap the benefits of the time and money that has been invested, also in tourism,” explains Gracia Caffé of Redondo Events, the organization responsible for the annual Viva Brasil Festival. “We’ve done well; Embratur has been a festival partner since 2014, because together we can do an even better job introducing European people to Brazil and its fantastic holiday potential”. If the FIFA World Cup taught European tourists anything it’s that Brazil is a gigantic country; that temperatures can vary enormously; that there are lots of different cities, each with its own atmosphere; and that the country, with its world-famous natural beauty, has much more to offer than just beaches, carnival and football – though these three are certainly part of Brazil’s DNA. The World Cup showed Brazil’s diversity to the world; a fantastic boost for the Brazilian tourism industry and for the country itself. Few countries in the world have so many different holiday options. Whether you want to feel the magic of the Amazon, sunbathe on a tropical beach in Bahia, or visit a big metropolis like Rio de Janeiro or Sao Paulo – Brazil’s got everything! So Brazil is on the rise, though this does have a downside. While Europe has spent the last few years struggling with a financial crisis the Brazilian economy has been growing fast, and more and more of the country’s poorest people have been joining the middle classes. This is good news, on the face of it, but it has also meant that local prices in Brazil have been rising, and that puts pressure on the tourist sector. Everything has been getting more expensive in Brazil over the last few years, because of economic growth. Thankfully, the Brazilian government is aware of it and has taken steps. Prices have hardly risen at all lately, and that’s good news. However, Brazil will remain a popular destination. After all, over 1.6 million Europeans a year visit Brazil (35% of Brazil’s total tourist arrivals). That’s already an impressive number, but we are convinced that it could, and should, be many more. Viva Brasil’s European-based promotion campaigns around the World Cup and the Olympic Games in 2016 could be able to contribute to it. As if that weren’t enough, we also know that European visitors to Brazil who come home to tell friends and relations about their experiences are also doing good marketing work. This is because everyone who goes to Brazil becomes a fan; they talk about the country with passion and enthusiasm. And once they’ve been, they keep going back. Clearly, Brazil is much more than just a holiday destination: it’s a feeling, a rhythm, perhaps even an addiction... but a very enjoyable one! On 12 June the 2014 FIFA World Cup kicks off in Brazil. On 5 May, Dutch talk show hosts Pauw & Witteman had a look at what we might expect to see. Their special guests were Nanko van Buuren (who works in Brazil’s slums), Marjon van Royen (a Dutch correspondent in Brazil), Barbara Baarsma (an economist), Frits Barend (a journalist and football fan) and the Brazilian singer Lilian Vieira. The TV programme’s opening tune was played in a special samba version, and during live music played at the end of the broadcast the dancing girls and capoeira dancers of Batucando put on an energetic show. Last Thursday 230 Tech Data Nederland employees were inspired to write the RAP lyrics for their own Tech Data song. They then performed it together in a Grand Finale, with half the room rapping and the other half drumming. The atmosphere was electric and the participants were clearly having a great time. “We gonna build a bond that’s chill. And listen up to the man that’s payin’ – know what I’m sayin’?” sung one of the groups in chorus. The programme was held at Innstyle in Maarssen, and was preceded by management presentations. Well after the final show people were still singing their rap lines on the dance floor!
